Saudi Arabia is exploring geothermal energy as a robust alternative for its cooling and desalination needs, potentially outpacing solar and wind energy. Unlike traditional renewables, geothermal energy provides consistent baseload power year-round, critical for the Kingdom’s rising demand for air conditioning and potable water. A pilot project by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and TAQA Geothermal aims to tap this resource, guiding national energy policies and promoting wider geothermal development. Research professor Thomas Finkbeiner emphasizes the energy source’s potential to decentralize the grid and generate employment. Despite geothermal’s advantages, it currently accounts for just 0.36% of global electricity generation due to high initial costs and limited awareness. However, Saudi Arabia’s unique geographical challenges make geothermal a viable option, potentially supporting the Vision 2030 goal of generating 50% of electricity from renewables while fostering stability and economic growth. Investments in renewable technologies could significantly enhance the Kingdom’s energy landscape.
