Two Meta Superintelligence Recruitments Return to OpenAI After Just Weeks

In a significant setback for Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, at least two leading AI researchers, Avi Verma and Ethan Knight, have departed after less than a month to return to OpenAI. Chaya Nayak, formerly head of generative AI at Meta, is also moving to OpenAI, prompting speculation about the reasons behind these rapid exits. Meta, which is heavily investing in its superintelligence initiative to compete with OpenAI, faces challenges as additional talents like Rishabh Agarwal announce their departures, citing the appeal of new risks. Despite Meta’s substantial budget and recruitment efforts, which include potential $300 million compensation packages, doubts about internal dynamics and technical direction have emerged. The Superintelligence Labs team operates largely in isolation and reports directly to Mark Zuckerberg, raising questions about its effectiveness. As Meta continues to recruit aggressively, OpenAI’s HR head has criticized their tactics as “desperate” and “unethical,” highlighting the competitive landscape of AI talent acquisition.
