Gemini Trails ChatGPT Online, Yet Google Boasts Four AI Apps in the Top 50

The latest report from Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) highlights a shifting landscape in AI consumer apps, showing a competitive race between ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. While only eleven new web apps appeared since March 2025, the mobile sector welcomed 14 new apps, partly due to crackdowns on “ChatGPT clones.” ChatGPT continues to lead in web visits, with Gemini rapidly gaining traction, especially on Android. Grok, X’s AI assistant, reached over 20 million monthly active users, following strong promotions. Chinese companies dominate mobile AI, with Quark, Doubao, and Kimi ranking in the web’s top 20, leveraging the vast domestic user base. That said, AI models from the US like Veo 3 are beginning to challenge this Chinese dominance. Meanwhile, the “vibe coding” category shows signs of growth, although many developers remain uninterested. Notably, fourteen companies have consistently appeared in the top rankings, emphasizing their resilience and market presence.
