OpenAI has announced the appointment of Vijaye Raji, an Indian-origin executive, as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Applications following the $1.1 billion acquisition of his startup, Statsig. This strategic move aims to enhance OpenAI’s product development, particularly for popular applications like ChatGPT and Codex. Raji brings over 20 years of experience, having held key roles at major tech companies such as Microsoft and Meta, where he served as vice president overseeing various platforms. In his new position, Raji will focus on product engineering for OpenAI’s application layer and will report to Fidji Simo, the new CEO of Applications. This acquisition is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to bolster its AI capabilities and comes amid a competitive tech talent landscape, where firms are vying for top AI engineers with lucrative offers. The Statsig integration into OpenAI will be gradual and is pending regulatory approval.
