AI Experts Urge OpenAI Academy to Combine AI Access with Robust Data Privacy and Ethical Protections

OpenAI launched the OpenAI Academy India on June 6, marking its first international deployment of an AI education platform in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This initiative aims to democratize AI knowledge by offering online and offline training in English, Hindi, and regional languages, targeting 25,000 students through webinars, workshops, and hackathons. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of making advanced AI tools accessible to foster innovation among startups and researchers. OpenAI plans to provide API credits to selected startups and train 100,000 teachers in generative AI tools. However, experts have raised concerns about data privacy, security, and the ethics of AI education, advocating for clear consent mechanisms and robust cybersecurity measures. The initiative has been welcomed as timely, urging for a balance between innovation and responsible oversight to position India as a leader in ethical AI adoption.
