The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) has collaborated with the Centre to give voice to Adi Vaani, an AI-powered translator for tribal languages. This initiative features text-to-speech (TTS) technology to facilitate translations in Santali, Mundari, and Bhili, with developments for Gondi underway. Native speakers contributed to the project by providing speech samples, ensuring authenticity. Additionally, IIITH aims to expand TTS tools to include Koya, Kolami, Naikdi, Chenchu, Kaikadi, Lambadi, Nakkala, and Konda Kammara, emphasizing a commitment to preserving tribal languages. Jointly with IIT Delhi, IIITH is a key player in a national effort to enhance communication in low-resource languages. Their translation systems can convert content between English, Hindi, and Santali, leveraging bilingual data from the Tribal Research Institute. These efforts are instrumental in making educational and health materials accessible to over 700 tribal communities in India, thereby bridging the digital divide and promoting cultural preservation through AI.
