Mining tools are subject to mechanical and abrasive stress, leading to rapid deterioration in harsh conditions. Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) optimizes the repair and enhancement of tools using localized laser radiation to melt metallic fillers. This precise and energy-efficient method minimizes residual stresses and distortions, making it suitable for delicate components. The AI-SLAM project aims to enhance LMD by automating machining path preparation through AI, leveraging a Canadian-German consortium’s expertise. This system integrates laser scanning, automated path planning, and quality assurance, significantly reducing setup time while improving process stability. The development of Extreme High-Speed Laser Material Deposition (EHLA) further enhances productivity, enabling high feed rates for thin, dense layers. Applications of LMD and EHLA span protective coatings for drill heads, bucket teeth, conveyor screws, and crushing tools, increasing durability and extending service life.
