Shadow AI Joins the Workforce: IBM Reports Employee Embracement of AI Technology

Recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) in corporate environments reveal significant trends and risks. Many employees are utilizing AI tools without IT approval, leading to concerns over data leaks and compliance issues. IBM indicates that this “shadow AI” practice costs businesses an average of $308,000 per data breach. A survey shows that while 79% of Canadian office workers use AI, only 25% utilize enterprise-grade tools; the majority depend on a mix of personal and employer applications. Despite these risks, 97% of workers believe AI boosts their productivity, with many reporting time savings of up to six hours weekly. However, only 29% feel their employer exploits AI’s full potential. IBM’s leaders urge organizations to invest in secured, sanctioned AI solutions to improve efficiency and meet business objectives. As AI adoption in workplaces grows, companies must bridge the gap between employee expectations and organizational capabilities through proactive strategies.
