Google Nest speakers have become popular for enabling voice commands with Google Assistant, allowing users to perform tasks around the home. However, Google has lagged behind Amazon’s Alexa in innovation. To revive its smart home devices, Google is introducing Gemini, a new AI avatar designed to replace Assistant and make commands more intuitive and fluid. While Gemini promises improvements in user interaction, concerns remain regarding the outdated hardware of Nest devices, which have seen little update since 2019. Comparatively, Amazon’s Echo Dot boasts advanced features like built-in temperature sensors and spatial awareness. Google’s lack of new hardware and its limited availability in many markets raise questions about its competitiveness. Although Gemini is set to launch on October 1, and may improve software capabilities, substantial hardware upgrades are still needed to truly reinvigorate the Google Nest lineup. Users hope that with Gemini, Google will address longstanding issues and eventually introduce new devices.
