San Jose Introduces AI Tool to Accelerate Building Permit Applications

San Jose is set to implement AI software aimed at optimizing the building permit process for accessory dwelling units (ADUs). This initiative will enable customers to pre-check their applications, thereby identifying missing or incomplete information before submission. Currently, over 90% of ADU applications are returned due to such issues. The city is presently testing the software alongside traditional manual checks, with internal evaluations expected to conclude this fall and a potential launch in the coming year. The AI system is anticipated to minimize delays, cut costs, and accelerate approvals, ultimately saving time for city staff. This initiative is part of San Jose’s broader technological advancements, including automated license plate readers and AI upskilling for the workforce. Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the need to modernize the permitting process, asserting that technology can facilitate faster and more efficient building practices in the “Capital of AI.”
