Microsoft to Integrate Anthropic Models into Office 365’s Copilot Features

Microsoft is set to integrate Anthropic’s Claude models into its Office 365 apps, enhancing Copilot features, as reported by The Information. This shift reflects a potential rift between Microsoft and OpenAI, despite Microsoft being OpenAI’s largest investor. Historically, Microsoft has relied on OpenAI’s technologies for AI functionalities in apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Recent negotiations regarding OpenAI’s restructuring appear to have fueled this development. Microsoft maintains that the partnership with OpenAI remains strong and ongoing, emphasizing that its collaboration will continue on frontier models. The decision to use Anthropic’s Claude 4 Sonnet, believed to outperform GPT-5 in certain aspects, could impact OpenAI’s standing in the market, particularly in generating aesthetically pleasing presentations. Notably, access to Anthropic models will not result in increased costs for users, with the Copilot subscription remaining at $30 per month, despite Microsoft needing to pay Amazon for the Claude technology.
