Consumers Show Strong Support for AI Tools in Enhancing Food and Agriculture

A recent report from Purdue University’s Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability reveals that consumers generally support using artificial intelligence (AI) in food and agriculture. The August Consumer Food Insights Report surveyed 1,200 U.S. consumers, highlighting a growing familiarity with AI since its first mention in June 2023. While two-thirds of respondents want transparency regarding AI’s role in food production, trust in AI varies; 70% of those doubtful about AI-assisted products cite safety concerns, whereas 53% believe AI can enhance food safety.

Furthermore, the findings indicate that younger consumers prioritize sustainability and health advantages in food choices, unlike older generations who tend to focus on safety and conventional options. The report underscores the importance of educating consumers about AI applications in agriculture to build trust and acceptance. With an average grocery spending of $127 per week, consumer sentiment also indicates rising expectations for food price increases amid ongoing economic uncertainty.
