On September 11, Alibaba Group announced a significant update to its Amap navigation platform, introducing the Amap Saojiebang feature, which enables users to rate local businesses akin to Meituan’s Dianping app. This feature allows reviews for restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions, aiming to enhance engagement with over 10 million customers through CNY1 billion (USD 140.4 million) in incentives for car rides and dining services. Launched in June, Amap Saojiebang covers 1.6 million service providers across 300 cities. Unlike Dianping, which is focusing on enhancing its food delivery service, Amap leverages unique mapping data, positioning itself to increase its local service market penetration. Meituan, facing declining profits, has initiated strategies to boost user engagement and credibility through AI-enhanced reviews. Following the announcements, Alibaba’s stock rose, while Meituan’s shares plummeted, illustrating the competitive pressures within China’s food delivery and local services market.
