Microsoft to Acquire One-Third Stake in OpenAI, But Reduce Revenue Share Impact

OpenAI is reportedly planning to reduce Microsoft’s revenue share from nearly 20% to around 8% by 2030. This shift aims to enable OpenAI to retain over $50 billion in additional revenue needed to support its significant computing costs. Under the existing agreement, Microsoft was guaranteed a 20% share through 2030. In exchange for this restructured deal, Microsoft is expected to receive one-third of the OpenAI entity, although it will not secure a board seat. The two companies are also negotiating terms related to server expenses and the potential use of artificial general intelligence (AGI). It remains uncertain whether a recent non-binding agreement between OpenAI and Microsoft already accounts for these anticipated revenue adjustments.
