United Utilities Launches Innovative AI Tool to Address Storm Overflow Issues

United Utilities is implementing cutting-edge AI technology to enhance the management of its storm overflows, aiming for a 60% reduction by 2030. The company has long utilized Dynamic Network Management (DNM) to identify issues like blockages in sewer networks through AI and machine learning. Building on this, it has introduced the Overflow Investigation Tool, an automated, data-driven system that offers real-time insights into overflow events. This tool leverages existing wastewater intelligence to pinpoint spill causes, uncover reduction opportunities, and drive effective problem resolution. The initiative is led by the Operational Intelligence Team, which focuses on efficient wastewater management through data analytics. Sam Sloan, Head of Operational Intelligence, emphasizes the importance of a systemic approach in addressing root causes quickly, utilizing real-time data and hydraulic modeling. This AI-powered method not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to environmental protection, showcasing United Utilities’ commitment to innovation and sustainability.
