WSC Unveils AI Tool to Identify Misdeclared Goods

The World Shipping Council (WSC) has introduced the Cargo Safety Program, an initiative designed to combat misdeclared and undeclared dangerous goods that lead to ship fires. With ship fires escalating to their highest levels in over a decade, this program aims to enhance maritime safety through AI-powered cargo screening and standardized inspection protocols. Misdeclared dangerous goods account for over 25% of cargo-related maritime incidents. The program utilizes advanced technology from the National Cargo Bureau (NCB) to analyze millions of bookings in real time, identifying potential risks through keyword searches and trade pattern recognition. Each alert is assessed by carriers and verified via targeted inspections, establishing common inspection standards and a feedback loop for continuous improvement. The initiative has garnered support from carriers representing over 70% of global TEU capacity, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to safer shipping practices and reducing the risk of catastrophic fires.
