Australian scientists have developed an innovative artificial intelligence (AI) tool that assesses women’s heart health risks by analyzing mammograms. Utilizing routine mammogram images and patient age, this AI predicts the likelihood of hospitalization or mortality due to cardiac issues over the next decade. Researchers from The George Institute for Global Health and various Australian universities aim to address the gap in heart disease awareness among women, despite cardiovascular diseases accounting for 35% of female deaths globally. Clare Arnott, director at The George Institute, emphasized that the misconception of heart disease being a male-centric issue leads to underdiagnosis in women. This AI tool offers an efficient screening method for both heart disease and breast cancer without the need for extensive medical history, making it particularly beneficial in areas with limited healthcare access. The study, based on data from over 49,000 women, was published in the journal Heart and highlights the tool’s potential for diverse populations.
