A recent study by OpenAI reveals how people predominantly use ChatGPT for practical tasks. Analyzing 1.5 million conversations from May 2024 to June 2025, it found that 30% of uses were work-related, while 70% were non-work-related, primarily focusing on “everyday tasks” that enhance economic value in users’ lives. Notably, three-fourths of interactions sought “practical guidance,” with nearly half of all messages being questions, indicating that users value ChatGPT as an advisor. Writing-related tasks represented the majority, mostly revolving around text modification rather than original content generation. Only 4% of queries involved programming, positioning ChatGPT as a decision-support tool, particularly beneficial in knowledge-intensive roles. Interestingly, the demographic landscape is changing, with female users increasing from 37% in 2024 to 52% in 2025. The study, characterized as a breakthrough in understanding consumer AI usage, employed automated tools for message analysis in collaboration with Harvard’s economist David Deming.
