OpenAI Unveils Study Analyzing ChatGPT User Demographics

OpenAI’s recent study reveals insights into ChatGPT user demographics and their usage patterns. Released on September 17, the analysis, although not peer-reviewed, categorizes ChatGPT usage into three primary areas: practical guidance, information seeking, and writing assistance. Notably, non-work-related interactions skyrocketed from 53% in 2024 to 73% in mid-2025, indicating a significant shift in usage trends. Approximately 56% of work-related queries focused on specific job tasks, while two-thirds of writing requests involved editing, critiquing, and translating text—highlighting writing as a critical skill in the workforce. The study also indicated that around half of all inquiries fell into the “asking” category, showcasing users seeking advice. Additionally, the user base has expanded to cover 10% of the global adult population, with a notable increase in users identified by feminine names, rising from 37% to 52% in the same timeframe.
