Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, known as Nano Banana, has surged in popularity in India, driving the Gemini app to the top of both the App Store and Google Play charts. As the leading country for Nano Banana usage, India showcases unique local trends, including retro 1990s Bollywood-inspired portraits and “AI sarees” depicting users in traditional attire. With an average of 1.9 million monthly downloads in India, the app’s growth outpaces the U.S. significantly. Daily downloads spiked by 667% shortly after the Nano Banana update, reaching 414,000 on September 13. Despite leading in downloads, India lags in in-app purchases, contributing $95,000 compared to the U.S.’s $2.3 million. Privacy and safety remain concerns, with Google implementing visible watermarks and hidden markers to identify AI-generated images. The company is exploring ways to improve user data protection while gathering feedback to enhance the user experience.
