A team from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Department of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) won first place at the Vibe Coding Hackathon during Honolulu Tech Week, securing a $3,000 prize. Comprising Kai Garcia, Aris Carlos, Sage Suzuki, and Lenox Covington, the team developed an innovative event management website for Honolulu Tech Week organizers. This platform allows hosts to input event details step-by-step and offers AI-powered features for venue suggestions and automated drafting of event descriptions. Utilizing OpenAI’s API, they integrated a chatbot for user assistance, making the application process seamless. Impressively, they completed the project in just 3.5 hours, showcasing their adaptability and collaborative skills. In line with the hackathon’s theme, the team harnessed platforms like ChatGPT and Claude, marking the first extensive use of AI for all members in a competition. Their success not only highlights local talent but also showcases the potential of AI-driven innovation in software development within Hawaiʻi.
