A recent study by LegalBenchmarks.ai reveals that AI tools can match or surpass human lawyers in generating reliable contract drafts. The study found that human lawyers achieved a reliability rate of 56.7%, while AI tool Gemini 2.5 Pro reached 73.3%, outpacing the top human performance at 70%. Analyzing 13 AI tools against human outputs across 30 real-world tasks, the research highlighted that specialized legal AIs flagged legal risks missed by human lawyers, identifying risks in 83% of outputs compared to 55% for general tools.
Despite these findings, human lawyers excelled in complex tasks requiring context and judgment. The study also emphasized that while general-purpose AI tools performed well, specialized legal AIs excelled in workflow integration. The research suggests that while AI tools are adept at routine drafting, human expertise remains essential for complex negotiations, advocating for a collaborative future in legal drafting that combines human judgment with AI efficiency.
