OpenAI and Ive Recruit Apple Designers to Enhance Hardware Development

OpenAI has partnered with Jony Ive to develop AI-powered hardware under the brand io. Recent reports indicate that io is leveraging suppliers familiar to Apple, having sealed a deal with Luxshare, a significant Apple assembler, and courting Goertek for component supply. The focus is on innovative wearables, with potential products including a smart speaker without a display, glasses, a digital voice recorder, and a wearable pin, targeting a release by late 2026 or early 2027.

Notably, OpenAI has attracted over two dozen employees from Apple, enhancing its design and engineering team. This talent acquisition includes hardware engineers who were pivotal in Apple’s consumer hardware projects. The allure of working alongside seasoned professionals like Jony Ive and Evans Hankey, coupled with competitive compensation, is a draw for these recruits. As OpenAI accelerates its development, it marks a significant shift in the tech landscape, moving towards groundbreaking AI hardware solutions.
