Innovative AI Tool Predicts Risk of Severe Vision Loss

Researchers at University College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital have developed an innovative AI model to revolutionize the management of keratoconus, a condition affecting 1 in 350 people, primarily young adults. This AI system analyzes OCT scans to predict which patients require immediate treatment, such as corneal cross-linking, versus those who can be monitored, thus alleviating years of anxiety and unnecessary hospital visits for patients. In clinical trials using 36,673 scans, the AI achieved a 90% accuracy in risk classification after incorporating data from follow-ups. This breakthrough not only promises to enhance patient treatment for keratoconus but also holds potential for diagnosing other eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration. By streamlining the diagnostic process, healthcare systems could save time and resources, directing attention to more critical cases while preventing vision loss. This technology may significantly transform ophthalmic care, offering timely interventions and improving patient outcomes.
