Instagram is enhancing its safety measures for Britain’s teenagers with new AI technology that identifies users who misrepresent their age. From September 22, the app will automatically convert accounts of users suspected to be under 18 into ‘Teen Accounts,’ designed to ensure a safer experience. This initiative aims to protect minors from online predators and inappropriate content.
Teen Accounts come with stringent limitations: they are set to private, enable messaging only from approved followers, restrict sensitive content, and allow parents to monitor usage and set time limits. Parents will receive notifications on how to discuss age verification with their teens, emphasizing the importance of accurate information online.
Despite concerns about young users’ mental health, Instagram continues to promote these safety features amid calls for better protections. The AI initiative, initially successful in the US, now expands to the UK, Canada, and Australia, marking an important step in safeguarding the online experience for teenagers.
