OpenAI has announced plans to construct five new data centers across the US as part of its ambitious Stargate initiative, increasing total capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts—comparable to seven nuclear reactors. Developed in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, the sites will create over 25,000 onsite jobs. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the infrastructure demands of AI compared to the internet and highlighted Texas’s innovative potential as a model for rapid scaling.
Three sites are located in Texas, New Mexico, and a Midwest location, with Oracle contributing to an already announced 4.5 gigawatt capacity expansion. Additionally, OpenAI plans two more sites in Ohio and Texas, in partnership with SB Energy. The initiative, part of a broader technology push underlined by President Trump’s AI action plan, aims to enhance American leadership in AI and competes globally. The Abilene flagship site is on track for a mid-2026 completion, utilizing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
