Important Update: Discontinuation of GitHub App-Based Copilot Extensions

GitHub is set to deprecate GitHub Copilot Extensions (GitHub Apps) on November 10, 2025, transitioning to the Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. This shift provides a universal standard for AI agent integration, allowing developers to utilize a single MCP server across various compatible agents like Claude Code. While GitHub Copilot Extensions will cease functionality after November 10, existing VS Code Copilot Extensions will remain supported. Developers using Copilot Extensions must plan for replacements and disable the Extension configuration in hybrid apps to maintain Marketplace visibility. Key dates include a prohibition on new extension creation starting September 24, 2025, and brownout testing from November 3-7, 2025. MCP servers offer modular architecture, cross-platform compatibility, and improved performance, streamlining the development process. Developers are encouraged to explore the GitHub MCP Registry and consult related documentation for building MCP servers.
