Nine months post-launch, Google’s Gemini AI has advanced from text and charts to handling complex formulas in Google Sheets. Positioned on the right side of Sheets, Gemini now offers users suggested formulas and step-by-step instructions on data manipulation. If an error occurs, it provides guidance on correction. For instance, when experimenting with a messy wedding guest spreadsheet, Gemini efficiently suggested a COUNTIF formula to count RSVPs and even diagnosed the issue of missing data. While struggling with a more complex task of calculating total distances traveled by guests, Gemini acknowledged limitations but offered alternative solutions, like using the Google Maps API or the Haversine formula. This AI assistance significantly reduces the time spent on searches for appropriate functions, making it easier for users to manage their data. Although tasks like finding geographical coordinates remain tedious, Gemini’s support builds confidence in effectively using Google Sheets.
