Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has intensified its legal battle against OpenAI by filing a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The complaint alleges that OpenAI unlawfully poached employees from xAI, aiming to access confidential technologies related to Grok, xAI’s flagship chatbot. The lawsuit claims OpenAI is engaged in “a deeply troubling pattern” of recruiting key personnel and promoting breaches of confidentiality agreements.
OpenAI has denied these allegations, criticizing them as part of Musk’s ongoing harassment. The lawsuit also highlights a former xAI engineer, Xuechen Li, who is implicated in a separate case regarding trade secret theft, and includes claims that OpenAI hired other xAI employees to acquire sensitive information. This legal conflict adds to a broader dispute between Musk and OpenAI, which includes claims of betrayal over OpenAI’s transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity. Both parties have yet to respond to queries regarding this escalating situation.
