Neon Mobile, a new app that gained quick popularity on the App Store, allows users to earn money by letting the app record their phone calls. Launched just a week ago, it briefly outperformed Meta’s Threads, offering 30 cents per minute for calls between Neon users. However, privacy concerns erupted after TechCrunch reported a security flaw that exposed users’ phone numbers and call recordings, prompting Neon to go offline for a security audit. CEO Alex Kiam stressed the importance of ensuring data is anonymized before selling it to AI companies. The app quickly attracted attention, rising from No. 79 to No. 6 in the top free apps, although its ranking has since declined following security issues. Neon must navigate complex legal landscapes regarding call recording consent while competing in the burgeoning AI training data market, where major tech firms are investing heavily for robust data acquisition.
