OpenAI and Shopify are transforming online shopping with their new feature, Instant Checkout, allowing consumers to buy products directly within ChatGPT. This integration simplifies the purchasing process, enabling users to make transactions without leaving the chat interface. The collaboration also includes Etsy, letting ChatGPT users buy from U.S. sellers seamlessly.
Zak Stambor, an analyst at Emarketer, notes that this move positions ChatGPT as a potential e-commerce hub, even as the feature undergoes refinement. A select group of prominent Shopify merchants, such as Glossier and Spanx, will participate in an early access program. Merchants retain their brand identity and customer relationships while benefiting from enhanced visibility.
Vanessa Lee, Shopify’s VP of Product, highlighted the shift in shopping behavior, emphasizing AI’s role in product discovery.
