This collaboration includes sourcing memory chips from Samsung Electronics, with OpenAI anticipating a demand for 900,000 DRAM wafers monthly. SK Hynix will also contribute to memory production for the Stargate project, backed by a commitment of $500 billion from OpenAI, Oracle, and Softbank for global data center infrastructure. OpenAI is additionally partnering with SK Telecom to establish “Stargate Korea” as part of this expansive initiative. Floating data centers are gaining traction, with other players like NYK Line and NTT Facilities exploring similar projects. Existing examples, such as the Stockton floating data center in California, highlight the viability of this concept, promoting sustainability through reduced carbon emissions.
