Despite popular belief, which even includes Mosseri’s own family questioning how ads seem eerily relevant, he affirmed that Meta does not use phone microphones for this purpose, calling it a “gross violation of privacy.” Instead, he explained that the accuracy of Meta’s ad targeting derives from sophisticated algorithms that analyze user interactions, particularly through partnerships with advertisers who provide data about website visits. As Meta prepares to utilize AI for enhanced ad targeting, its new privacy policy, effective December 16, will allow data collection from user interactions with AI products, potentially intensifying concerns over privacy. Mosseri noted that sometimes, users may simply experience coincidences or psychological effects related to ad exposure rather than actual listening.
