OpenAI Revamps Copyright Policies and Introduces Monetization for Sora in Response to Feedback

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced significant updates to the AI video app Sora, addressing copyright concerns from Hollywood. In a recent blog post, he confirmed two key changes aimed at enhancing copyright control for rightsholders. The first update introduces more granular controls for the generation of characters, allowing rightsholders to determine how their intellectual property (IP) can be used. Altman emphasized the importance of user feedback post-launch, ensuring that creators can engage in “interactive fan fiction” while maintaining control over their characters.

Previously, Sora’s opt-out policy required explicit requests from companies to exclude their IP, leading to concerns from entities like Disney. Additionally, Altman mentioned plans to explore revenue-sharing models for rightsholders, with hopes that engagement will surpass financial benefits. While recognizing potential challenges during implementation, he remains committed to fostering a compelling and cooperative environment for all stakeholders in the creative industry.
