Motion Picture Association Condemns OpenAI for Sora 2 Copyright Controversy

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has urged OpenAI to promptly address issues with its Sora 2 copyright opt-out system, as unauthorized videos featuring copyrighted characters have surged online. MPA Chairman Charles Rivkin emphasized the importance of OpenAI taking responsibility for preventing infringement, rather than shifting the burden to copyright holders. While OpenAI plans to enhance rights management for character generation, CEO Sam Altman has not confirmed that copyrighted content will be completely removed. This situation highlights ongoing tensions in the entertainment industry regarding AI-generated content. Previous lawsuits from Disney, Universal, and Warner Bros. against Midjourney reflect similar concerns about copyright infringement and fair use claims. The MPA’s stance reinforces the need for robust protections for creators under copyright law. As technology evolves, a more comprehensive framework for copyright and AI usage is essential to safeguard the rights of content creators and maintain industry standards.
