Anthropic, the AI startup supported by Alphabet’s Google and Amazon, is set to open its first office in India in early 2026, capitalizing on the country’s rising demand for AI tools. This strategic move aligns with India’s accelerating AI adoption, driven by increased enterprise tech spending and a skilled talent pool. With nearly a billion internet users, India is emerging as a crucial market for global AI companies. Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, now ranks as its second-largest market after the U.S., competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Currently, Claude is available in India through free and paid tiers, though local currency pricing is not yet offered. Co-founder Dario Amodei is visiting India this week to engage with officials and partners. Bengaluru, recognized as India’s tech hub, will host the new office. Meanwhile, competitors like OpenAI, which plans to establish operations in New Delhi, are intensifying the rivalry within the Indian AI landscape.
