Former Apple CEO Claims OpenAI is Apple’s First Genuine Competitor in Decades

Former Apple CEO John Sculley has expressed concerns about Apple’s position in the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, stating that the company is now facing a “real competitor” in OpenAI. Sculley emphasized that Apple has struggled to establish itself in AI, especially highlighted during their recent event where AI topics were notably absent. He noted, “AI has not been a particular strength for them.”

Sculley, who led Apple from 1983 to 1993, argues that as the smartphone industry evolves, AI agents may replace traditional apps for many tasks. OpenAI has advanced its capabilities, allowing users to connect multiple applications through AI like ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly developing a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, currently limited to internal use. Notably, OpenAI’s acquisition of former Apple designer Jony Ive could signal a bridge between hardware and AI, giving them a competitive edge against Apple in the future.
