Workers at these mills create over 30 articles each week using AI chatbots. This practice thrives in China’s competitive academic landscape, where strict publishing targets pressure students and researchers. The report showed that these paper mills advertise their ghostwriting services on social media and e-commerce platforms, often disguising them as “academic support” or “editing” to bypass restrictions on terms like “academic ghostwriter.” Some even ironically claim to be “AI detectors.” The rise of affordable generative AI tools has significantly boosted output; one Wuhan-based agency reportedly processes over 40,000 orders annually, with prices ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. This alarming trend highlights the ethical challenges facing academic integrity in China.
