OpenAI Restricts Deepfakes of Martin Luther King Jr.

Bernice King, daughter of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has urged social media users to refrain from using OpenAI’s Sora 2 tool to create inappropriate videos of her father. She joined Zelda Williams in a protest against the unauthorized use of deceased public figures’ likenesses. In response to these concerns, OpenAI announced on October 16, 2025, that estates of public figures can request the removal of their likenesses from its database, prioritizing the control families have over how their loved ones are represented.

Despite this step, criticisms remain regarding the ethical implications of AI technology. Experts highlight the lack of proper safeguards in Sora 2, raising concerns about potential misinformation when realistic content is generated. The tech industry often operates under a framework that disregards consent and ethics, making it challenging for tools like Sora to comply with acceptable moral standards. OpenAI’s commitment to addressing these issues remains uncertain.
