Hollywood Takes a Stand Against AI: Midjourney and Stable Diffusion Face the Consequences

Tensions between the creative industries and AI companies have escalated into legal battles with Disney and Universal initiating a copyright lawsuit against AI image generator Midjourney. The complaint, filed in June, claims that Midjourney systematically infringed on copyrights by using countless protected images to develop its AI. Disney’s legal chief emphasized that piracy persists regardless of the perpetrator. In parallel, Getty Images has launched a lawsuit against Stability AI in London, accusing it of using millions of copyright-protected photos for training its models. Stability AI argues its practices constitute “fair use.” Legal experts suggest the outcome of these cases may redefine the boundaries for AI companies in terms of copyright. Disney and Universal are pursuing significant damages not merely for compensation but to challenge the fair use argument, establishing necessary legal frameworks for the use of copyrighted materials in AI development.
