ChatGPT’s Global Market Share Declines to 74% Amid Concerns Over AI-Induced ‘Brain Rot’

Recent data from Similarweb’s Global AI Tracker reveals a shift in the generative AI landscape, with ChatGPT’s global traffic share declining from 87.1% to 74.1% over the past year. Competing platforms like Google’s Gemini and Perplexity AI are gaining ground, with Gemini’s share rising from 6.4% to 12.9%, and Perplexity surpassing 2.4%. Other competitors, including Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot, have stable shares.

Additionally, a study by researchers warns about the “brain rot” of large language models (LLMs) that are trained on low-quality data. These models showed a significant decline in reasoning abilities when exposed to “junk” text, emphasizing the need for improved data quality in AI training. Regular cognitive health checks and stringent quality controls are essential to prevent long-term performance degradation. As generative AI matures, user preferences for personalized and real-time access tools are reshaping the market dynamics.
