Cameo Files Trademark Infringement Lawsuit Against OpenAI Over Sora App Features

OpenAI’s Sora faces a legal challenge from Cameo, a startup specializing in personalized celebrity videos. Cameo filed a lawsuit on Tuesday in California, accusing OpenAI of trademark infringement over its new “Cameo” feature within the Sora app, which enables users to create AI-generated celebrity likenesses. Cameo claims OpenAI’s use of the name will confuse consumers and dilute its brand, arguing that alternative names were available. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages and a court order to prohibit OpenAI from using the “Cameo” name. Cameo CEO Steven Galanis expressed disappointment over OpenAI’s refusal to settle amicably. Meanwhile, OpenAI dismissed the claims, asserting that the term “cameo” cannot be exclusively owned. This legal dispute highlights OpenAI’s aggressive expansion into various online markets, which includes interests in adult content and the hiring of former Meta employees to enhance its social media initiatives.
