Cameo Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI for Trademark Infringement Related to AI-Generated Celebrity Video App

Cameo, a celebrity video messaging platform based in Chicago, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for trademark infringement. The legal action targets OpenAI’s new “Cameo” feature within its Sora video generation app, which utilizes AI to create celebrity videos that have reportedly confused consumers. Cameo’s co-founder and CEO, Steven Galanis, expressed concerns that OpenAI’s use of the trademarked name could threaten their unique business model of offering personalized videos from real celebrities. OpenAI contested the lawsuit, claiming that the term “cameo” cannot be exclusively owned. Since its 2017 launch, Cameo has seen success but faced challenges post-pandemic, leading to significant layoffs. Recently, the company has returned to profitability and expanded its workforce. The lawsuit seeks to prevent OpenAI from using the “Cameo” name and seeks damages, highlighting the ongoing legal battles surrounding intellectual property in the evolving tech landscape.
