Recent layoffs impacting major companies like Amazon and Microsoft have primarily targeted middle management, with firms aiming to flatten hierarchies for increased efficiency. Microsoft specifically highlighted “reducing organizational layers” as a key reason. While AI is often cited as a reason for these changes, the truth is more nuanced; it’s not always the culprit.
I conducted an experiment to assess whether AI could successfully apply for a mid-level management position by evaluating responses from top AI models: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. They were tasked with writing a cover letter and responding to interview questions for a Program Manager role, requiring extensive project management and client relationship expertise.
Claude emerged as the best candidate, demonstrating strategic depth and emotional intelligence, essential for senior roles. Gemini followed closely, showcasing structure and clarity. This experiment illustrates that while AI can mimic management functions, true leadership relies on human judgment and empathy.
