Faculty Awarded Bezos Grants to Harness AI for Environmental Solutions

Cornell University has secured three substantial grants from the Bezos Earth Fund’s AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge, focusing on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to combat climate change and environmental deterioration. Notable recipients include Eilyan Bitar, K. Lisa Yang Center at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Ayshwarya Subramanian. Bitar’s $1.8 million project aims to optimize electric vehicles (EVs) as mobile energy storage, enhancing grid decarbonization through AI that manages real-time EV energy use. The Yang Center will also utilize a $1.8 million grant to implement AI analytics for monitoring illegal activities affecting forest ecosystems, crucial for biodiversity conservation. Subramanian’s $2 million project will create AI tools to streamline genomic sequencing for wildlife conservation, enabling data-driven genetic interventions. These initiatives illustrate Cornell’s commitment to innovative, AI-driven solutions for urgent environmental challenges. The funding underscores the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in tackling biodiversity loss and climate change.
