Research Reveals That Rude Prompts Enhance ChatGPT’s Accuracy, Suggesting Politeness Might Be Overrated

A recent study from Pennsylvania State University reveals that tone significantly impacts artificial intelligence performance, specifically with chatbots like ChatGPT. Led by Om Dobariya and Akhil Kumar, the research found that rudeness can actually enhance LLM (large language model) accuracy. Analyzing 250 test prompts—including very polite to very rude phrasing—the study determined that “very rude” prompts yielded an accuracy of 84.8%, compared to 80.8% for “very polite” prompts. This suggests that clarity in language, rather than emotional tone, drives better AI responses. Politeness often employs indirect phrasing, which can cloud intent, while straightforward commands lead to more accurate answers. However, the researchers cautioned against normalizing rude behavior towards AI, emphasizing that such interactions might degrade user experience and accessibility. This study enriches the field of prompt engineering, indicating that newer models process tone differently than older systems. In essence, prioritizing clarity over courtesy enhances AI effectiveness.
