OpenAI is transitioning its Sora video generation service from a free model to a paid system due to sustainability concerns over its offering of 30 free videos per day. Bill Peebles from OpenAI highlighted that the company may need to eventually restrict free access to conserve GPU resources. Peebles envisioned a future where creators could charge for appearances of popular characters, aligning with conventional practices of intellectual property monetization. Initially, Sora gained popularity by using copyrighted materials without compensation, but the shift will support rights holders with actual revenue opportunities.
