A recent survey by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism reveals a rising trend in using generative AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, for news updates, especially among younger demographics. While only 7% of respondents across 48 countries reported using AI for news, this figure rises to 12% for those under 35 and 15% for those under 25. Users appreciate the personalized and relevant news provided by chatbots, with many employing AI to summarize (27%), translate (24%), or recommend (21%) articles. However, distrust remains, with concerns about transparency and accuracy, as AI can generate false information, known as “hallucinations.” Traditional media outlets are struggling against the rise of social networks and video platforms, with nearly half of 18-24-year-olds citing social media as their main news source. This shift has financial implications for news organizations, prompting some to collaborate with AI developers while others pursue legal action over copyright claims.
