OpenAI has secured a US$200 million (S$256 million) contract with the US Defense Department to explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in administrative and security functions. Announced on June 16, the one-year pilot program marks OpenAI’s first initiative under its newly established division, OpenAI for Government. The company aims to enhance processes such as healthcare management for military personnel and cyber threat prevention. This division consolidates OpenAI’s various government projects, including ChatGPT Gov, tailored for government use, alongside collaborations with NASA, the National Institutes of Health, and the Treasury Department. Additionally, OpenAI plans to partner with Anduril Industries to develop AI for anti-drone systems. These efforts align with OpenAI’s commitment to advancing AI tools that support democratic values, highlighted by its recent acquisition of key personnel from governmental security sectors.
