AI Revolutionizes Work: Indie Developers Experience the Impact Firsthand

As an independent app developer for over a decade, I’ve felt the profound effects of the “AI-driven work revolution,” particularly as an engineer. AI is increasingly taking over tasks traditionally done by humans, leading to a decline in demand for engineers and a shift in hiring practices. This has triggered concerns about potential mass unemployment in our field. Additionally, the competitive intellectual edge once held by skilled professionals is diminishing, as AI tools become more accessible, allowing even inexperienced users to create apps quickly. While this levels the playing field, it also widens the gap between those who can maximize AI’s potential and those who cannot. Furthermore, the rapid pace of AI-enabled development creates mental stress, as engineers face pressure to constantly manage multiple tasks, leading to exhaustion despite increased productivity. To cope, I’ve started setting work limits to maintain balance amid this evolving landscape.
